Together with 9 leading international scientists, Matrixware initiated the Information Retrieval Facility (IRF) Society, a platform to improve the global transfer of knowledge between information professionals and information retrieval scientists. The IRF, located in Vienna, Austria, is an open, non-for-profit research institute in the field of applied information science that researchers can use to develop new retrieval methods for complex documents like patents.
The IRF provides a wide range of services with the goal of facilitating research in the field of information retrieval. Scientific members of the IRF can access free of charge the "Large Data Collider", a semantic supercomputer, one of the most powerful NLP systems in the world, built by Matrixware in cooperation with one of the leading manufacturers in Scientific Supercomputing. This unique infrastructure enables researchers to perform large scale experiments that would not be possible under normal laboratory conditions.
The IRF provides also a number of test collections for scientific experimentation. One of them, the MAtrixware Research Collection (MAREC) is a subset of Matrixware's commercial grade Alexandria repository, a global storage facility for high quality scientific, technical and business information.
The IRF research activities focus on large scale information retrieval and industrial relevance. Current projects address for example the challenges of evaluation, data representation, visualisation of search results, patent search and next generation search.
Matrixware supports the Information Retrieval Facility Symposium, an annual international forum aimed at bridging the gap between the latest developments in information retrieval science and the techniques used by industry end-users, particularly in the field of intellectual property. The IRF Symposium gives representatives from the industrial and scientific communities the opportunity to exchange their expertise and discuss potential solutions to problems related to patent searching and analysis.
